third gear slipping badly

my bike started slipping an i suspected it to be the clutch at first, but when i ride it agressively shifting from second to third, third gear is slipping and jumping badly especially under load. what causes this, how large of a repair is this and is there any suggested preventative repair to keep this from re-occuring? any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated
