I have a 98 intruder that did the same thing. It was a bad connection betweent the rectifier and the battery. check where the rectifier connects to a wiring harness. It is the red wire that goes straight to the battery. All I had to do was clean and squeeze together the female spade connection on the red wire. I spent 2 weeks figureing this one out. I have more to say on it. if needed..
