In basic terms the bike was too slow, too heavy to cut it back in the late 90´s and not being a wine it would not have improved with age. However once you resolve the injection issue its a gem, a fast enough tool full of character with easy low maintenance. But putting aside that it was not a 916 and you solve very easily and cheaply the weakest link on the bike, its primitive fuel injection (little more than electronic carbs and badly set up carbs at that) with the more modern MYECU from Mike Jefferies in Auz you have a diamond. Its fast enough, more gutz than the 900ss Dukes of the time, its simple cheap do it yourself maintenance with robust engineering and state of the art suspension and brakes for the late 90´s. It big, but the center of gravity is low and you can have great fun hustling it along with safe predictable handling. I find it comfortable, some say the seat is not, but i have not had an issue on 300 plus mile rides, those short in arm length may have issues as well.. Pillions unless they are ´petite´ will have issues also, but if you want a cruiser buy a Honda Goldwing. This is a bike for those who like to hurry and have better things to do than clean chains. |
