I bought a VT250 Spada as a temporary ride for a few months while visiting friends and family back in Cape Town. However, shortly after getting the bike I noticed a very loud cam chain noise at anything more than very low revĀ“s - so took it to a local mechanic, who recommended replacing the cam chains and improving the tensioner (Honda dealership in South Africa were not interested in helping as this is a grey import model here). He accomplished this very quickly and the bike sounded infinitely better afterwards. In addition to replacing the chains he had rigged an extra manual (spring) tensioner into the existing tensioner arrangement. However, it appears he never really tested the bike as within the first 3 or 4kms it blew a head gasket and overheated. Apparently, it is necessary to loosen off the head to be able to replace the cam chains, so the mechanic did not seem too surprised at the result. After importing replacement head gaskets from UK, I had these fitted (and the heads were skimmed) but then the same thing occurred within 10 or 15mins of gentle riding. This time the mechanic guessed that there were micro-fractures in one of the heads and after some time he tracked down some replacements from a crashed bike. These have been fitted but the bike is still overheating (although no oil present in the coolant system this time). Does anyone have any better idea of what can be going wrong? And more importantly how to fix it? Thanks Flash |
