Raising the handle bars

I had a Deauville for a few years and have recently bought a VFR, I just spent 3 days riding from Cork, South of Ireland to Belfast and and around the Down coast etc (weather crap by the way). I had some serious tightness in my shoulders from the seating postion when I spent more then 2 hours continous riding, and was wondering has anyone raised the handle bars on their bikes and if so did it help. I love the bike and have no intention of changing it because of this, but it would be nice if something simple could ease the problem
