It might look pretty good parked up alongside other bikes, but as soon as you fire up the hairdryer engine there´ll be a sudden loss of respect for you and your bike. When you ride past someone they´ll notice that the engine is giving all it´s got, but you´re really not going anywhere fast. You have to change gear for every 10mph increase in speed, or less (these things only do 50mph, maybe 55 *TOPS* and you have 6 gears, do the math), so if you accelerate past someone standing still from stationary, you´ll have gone up 3 or 4 gears by the time you´ve past them! not cool. I know lots of 16 year olds like to make up stories and there´s lods of myths of people who tuned their 50´s and got 80mph out of them, but it´s all bull. You can put a fatter pipe on it, maybe bigger jets and a K&N, but think about it, the motor isn´t going to rev much higher that it does, and your gearbox is the same, so you may notice a *slight* increase in acceleration, but top speed will always be 50/55... It´s not a ´racing´ bike, it´s a 50cc moped designed for kids who have too much cash. The weight of all the fairings just slow the thing down, you don´t really ever get up enough speed for aerodynamics to really be an issue. If you must get a 50, buy a Sendar. They´re not trying to be anything they aren´t, and are actually quicker (this is from experience here). Also, WHEN they brake down (and they will without fail, the spanish don´t make the best quality gear, and you´ll be revving the nuts out of the pee wee engine all the time to get every minute ounce of power out of it) you´ll be able to access the engine easier. So in conclusion: 1) do buy a 50 as you´ll have the best time of your life on it, but don´t get a crappy scooter (they´re for girls and old people). 2) Don´t buy a fake racing bike as everyone will think you´re a fool 3) buy a decent Derbi or similar 4) Buy a 125 ASAP and get rid of the hairdryer. 5) Don´t mess with carb jets, airboxes or filters unless you *really* know what you´re doing (and I don´t mean a mate told you). you´ll make the bike run lean and after a couple of hundered miles you´ll have a tasty seized engine (I got through 3 pistons/barrells... quite a steep learning curve). 6) Don´t be an idiot. Yeah, you may have been riding for 5 months, but bikes are treacherous, plus if you stack your 50 too many times will your mum let you get a 125? I don´t think so. 7) Have fun, and enjoy the wonderful feeling of having a motor push you along instead of having to pedal!!! |
