scooter or bike? said 2002-04-18 13:20 |
When I decided to get rid of one of our cars and have a bike my wife instantly began to lobby for a sccoter. I had an Aprilla Rs 125 or an RGV in mind, you see the problem. Eventually she confessed she was terrified of using a hand clutch, she had wheelied one as a teenager and never gone back! Problem was I can´t stand the riding position of scooters although I had no problems with automatic gears. The arguement earned the old XR3i a six month stay as our second car until I saw an advert for the DNA. A week later and two CBT tests we picked one up. It cost £2000 in October 2001 brand new,(list price was £2399) I got a good end of season discount thanks to the crappy wether from A1 scooters in Wakefield. I got to ride it home, about 10 miles worth and instantly liked it. The accelaration isn´t rapid but it still leaves most cars behind and after 1500 miles of running in now can hit 80mph although it´s slow from about 55 to 80mph. Handling is okay, it can be leaned over and flicked from side to side and the brakes are excellent. It really needs more mid range but whispers of an aftermarket 180 kit are coming through that should take care of that. The bike looks okay but some minor comestic modifications had to be made, hopefully Gilera will have done something about them in the 2002 model. The standard mirrors for a start are just naff. Horrible to look at, useless etc. I fitted an aftermarket pair off a Suzuki scooter for £25, looks a lot better. The stickers are a bit over the top as well, who wants a 4 valve sticker or a OHC label on the side panel? I removed all from the back and side panels and left just a ´Gilera ´ on the tank, a DNA on the headstock and the symbol on the fairing. This makes the bike look more like a bike and less like a toy. Overall I´m not dissapointed that my other half cheated me out of the Aprilla or RGv. The 4 stroke engine is smooth and the automatic gearbox pulls through traffic in rush hour with no problems. It´s actually quicker through traffic that a sccoter or a geared 125 cc bike, you can steer it with pure body weight at low speed and don´t have to worry about keeping the front wheel down when you wind it on for a gap. I would reccomend it as a first bike and when they make a 500cc model to keep my missus happy we will go for our tests! Until then I´m quite happy with the DNa and intend to keep it for the next year at least. |
