Replacing the Ignition

Hello.
I´m having a few problems with my bike and I don´t know much so help would be apriciated.
After I went out on my first trip, I came back and I heard a really high pitch wizzing sound from the engin which after about 10 minutes stoped (becuase the battery had run out.).
My mum´s boyfriend also managed to break the ignition so I need to do that, I just can´t seem work out how!
I´m going to get round to getting a new battery as the old one was completely empty, I topped up the water but it´s still not holding charge.
Any help apriciated!
Alex
