I have the original sales brouchre for the original Type 638 Mk.I. bike and have also owned one once and a friend owns two immaculate ones. Power on the unrestricted early ones was measured at 34 BHP @ 6,500 RPM with fuel consumption at 54 MPG @ 55 MPH. Early full power versions have the red line on the rev counter set at 7,000 RPM with the yellow "power band" area between 6,500 and 7,500 RPM. Later restricted versions (1988 onwards) were restricted and have 25 BHP @ 5,200 RPM (or 22 BHP in Holland) with the redline sat at 5,500 RPM which the engine exaust and intake restrictors won´t let the engine pass on load anyhow.

Exaust system is far shorter than the later restricted models and the baffles lack the restrictor collar on end section. Carb runs larger main jets than later models as well.

Type 638 JAWAs are sometimes refered to as either being full power versions or restricted/ordinary. Top speed on the Mk.I. is more than 100 MPH (160 KMH) on leaded petrol and still in the top 90´s MPH on unleaded fuel. I once ran a ported and gas flowed Type Mk.I. engine in a CZ twin frame to well past the 110 MPH marker on the speedometer on leaded in 1991 on a motorway even thoughthe bike was carrying camping gear on a rack at the time.

Will try to send pictures of both the Mk.I. JAWA Type 638 and the tachometer for the full power (34 BHP) version.

Regards,
Andy.
