It is an annoying rattling type noise. I have had a quick look at the water pump by taking the cover off and it seems OK. The water pump is driven by an un-lubricated gear from the crankshaft inside the alternator housing. I guess this is a loose mesh to prevent it gettting tight if it gets hot and is the source of the noise, but its only a guess.
