Er, the [picture you have is of a CZ 250 Type 988 crosser single and not the CZ 350 twin. I´ll have to send in a picture of both the Czech built 1977/1978 CZ 350 and the Aprilia built CZ 350 version. I own examples of both. The Czech built CZ 350 Type 472 from 1977/1978 comes only in the Sport version which uses either the Type 631 engine, Type 634 engine or in some cases, the Type 632/1 6 Volt engine. Power output in all cases is limited to only 22 BHP due to the small paper airfilter element and 105 main jet accordingly. Top speed is 86 MPH and fuel consumption is 67 MPG @ 60 MPH cruising. Bike is very cramped due to it´s small size for two up riding unless the pillion is small. Handling is the usual excellence from the CZ frame which corners like on rails and grinding away the pegs is common these bikes as crazy lean angles are possible on these bikes. The acceleration is enough to see off any four stroke of the period from the lights such as a CB400/4 and even the CB550/4 (which I´ve revelled in before now!!) however the airbox limitations soon see the engine loosing enthusiasm once past 75 MPH with the top speed of 86 MPH really being a chore to reach. Replacing the airbox nozzle with a K & N filter bunks the power outout up to 28 BHP and top speed is around 96 MPH (I´ve ridden several CZ 350´s that have been modded). Carb needs a 115 main jet for best effect. Stock brakes are dodgy so fit either Ferrodo AM4 or EBC Gold. The latter increase the braking from adiquate to amazing. Even stoppies can be performed!! Aprilia built version faster due to Italian components, bearings and magic in the engine. I own examples of both and there is a huge difference in performance and engine exaust notes. Aprilia version has TLS on both wheels and can push past the magical "Ton" with the rider upright. There are also the very rare CZ 305 twin bikes (Type 473) of which I own an example. All Czech built CZ twins have a top speed of 85/86 MPH with the exception of the DeLuxe CZ 250 versions which due to a single air intake nozzle and smaller main jets can only touch 76 MPH. Bike magzine tested a CZ 250 Sport back in 1980 and clocked it at 85 MPH through timing lights. They commented that it was faster than the HONDA CB 250 N Superdream which managed just 83 MPH. I know from my L plate days back in the early 1980´s that racing and beating Superdreams on a CZ 250 in a straight line wasn´t exactly very difficult as even the CZ 175 could do the same. Generally the engine size of a CZ twin relates mainly to rate of acceleration rather than top speed due to the restrictive airbox and exaust system. An unfairly maligned bike by the motorcycle press as many have outlasted their Japanese rivals in road mileage and reliability. Andy. |
