Different Fuel Capacities?

According to the spec sheet, the 2002, has a 5.2 gal tank and a 1.1 gal reserve. I have yet, even when empty, been able to put any more than 3.9 gal of fuel. Was there at any point in 2002, a different size tank option? Or is my fuel gauge just off? Thanks-
