Oil light

I have owned my 1999 virago 1100 for about a year and have had it serviced at a local yamaha dealer. I don´t know too much about the bike and I have been using her all summer. The last couple o times I used her the oil light came in while I was riding for about 30 seconds and then went off again. I visually checked the oil level and it seems fine. Does anyone know why the oil light might be coming on? Is it dangerous?
