I´ve had one for a few months and have also found the fuel economy varies a lot. (Sorry for the mixed measuring systems here:)According to Yamaha Japan, it´s supposed to do 30 kilometres per litre at 60 km/h (~35mph). With the 14 litre tank its about 85mpg. Thats: 30km x 5/8 = 18.75 miles 4.5 litres to the gallon. I get 200km from around 10-12 litres, so around 17-20 km/l for me. That´s about 56mpg. What I found when I had it new, I got much better economy, about another 60km out of a tank, but I was driving it at around 60km/h. Now, I ride on the freeway and side streets, about half-half. It seems when you open it up it gets very thirsty. This makes sense because the transmission is set up for lots of power down low, and the engine works hard at the top end (actually it feels quite good flat out). Also I´m a big boy and I have a big topbox fitted on a rack. So that might bring the figures down a bit. Perhaps you are riding at maximum accelleration and top speed all the time to get those figures? When I took it in for its first service, it was re-tuned and I was told the factory default does need adjusting (as it is set crudely), as well as at each service. I wouldn´t be happy with your economy either -- get it checked (under warranty?) |
