I bought 2001 venture new and went too approx 35000 kms. No problens with drive shaft, but learned a few things about the final drive.... very frequent oil changes required when bike is new as the new gearset produces lots of metal during the break-in period. Change oil at 500km 1500km 3000km and 5000km and you should be taking out fairly cuttings free oil. Also, I found that oil could become water contaminated (milky) if my tour took me into the rain. Likely this was a result of hot final drive being rapidly cooled in very high moisture environment and drawing moisture in thru the vent
