Cagiva Canyon 600 fuel consumption

i have recently bought a Cagiva canyon 600 1997 model and am concerned about the fuel consumption.
I am averaging about 45 miles to the gallon, does anybody know if this is normal as I think I might be running to much fuel.
i would appreciate any comments.
