I have a 650r and I went through the same problem. When honda made the bike ,EPA said that they must build two versions of it, a 49 state leagal, and a 50 state leagal version. The 50 state leagal because of california´s emitions. To meet them they had to lean the air, fuel mixture by putting a restrictor in the intake, blocking the air box, using a 165 main jet, and restricting the exaust. To solve this overheating problem and huge power loss, Honda sells a new exaust insert, intake boot, and a 175 main jet. The air box has two inserts that need removed, and a rubber snorkel tube that must go. Dont worry, this will not affect your filter action. Just remember, a lean mixture=a overheated bike. Do as followed an you will be a happier rider. For some extra protection, Sommers Racing Components sells a radiator cap, and some header wrap and some engine ice which really seemed to help also. good luck
