Hy Goose,

I drive a 1997 ST2 with a small 14-teeth front sprocket for more torque. I´ve done app. 20.000 km with this chain so far and there is no real wear showing. I lube it every 300-500 km with grease from a spray-can shell or castroll). Greasing it (without cleaning) just before a longer stop or at the end of the day so the solvents can evaporate and solidify (otherwise the grease all ends up on the rim after 5 minutes).

So I am quite satisfied so far, but I think 30.000 miles (48.000 km)is over-estimated. The chains and sprockets on Ducati are not very wide and oversised to keep the weight down(the chain and sprockets on my girl-friends Suzuki GS400E twin are wider and of a bigger diameter!!). I would settle for 35.000 km maximum given frequent greasing.

I understand your statement an I am looking into the possible alternativers of permanent greasing systems as the Scott Oiler(expensive and moderate succes). The German "CLS"-system looks promissing and well developed but has a prize that only is acceptable for professinal use.

Regards,
Rick
