finally, I got my hands on one! |

Ha! Finally I had my chance to ride the new Gt 1000. But not before I tried the Triumph Thruxton a few days before. I must say that the Triumph was a surprisingly nice bike to drive! And the sound was the big kick. It had the ´special´ triumph exhausts and the sound was awesome. But back to the Gt 1000. I had a red one for an hour and took it for a spin. The seating position was quite comfortable. Even a bit more forward leaning than I had thought. The big dissapointment was the sound. (especially after the wild roar of the thruxton) The Gt´s rumble was very decent. Not very quiet, but not an earthmoving experience either. But I am sure Ducati has a remedy for that. The ride was very smooth. Nice and quick response on the throttle, precise steering. But the sound...to quiet. And ofcourse, after weeks of heatwave after heatwave, I had the first rain since 8 weeks! Just my luck again... I had to get used to the throttle response. When you go off the throttle the bike breaks hard on the engine and if you pick up on the throttle it jerks forward, especially in the low rev´s. In town that is very tireing on the neck and shoulders. You need a velvet right hand and smooth clutch technique! But when you step on it it goes terrific! Lets say you get most enjoyment between 4 and 7000 rpm. I town (I drove mostly in town and on the ringway´s)the bike is a bit jerky in the low rev´s. But the ride is still comfortable with a sportive edge to it. It corners beautifully. No all that remains is to get my hand on it again so I can try it together with my wife. (still have to get her some lessons so she can have her own...and I can try the sport 1000...) I must say that the GT looks definetly better in red. But then again what doesn´t? In comparison with the triumph: the thruxton is smoother on the throttle, it pack´s less punch, It is a bit less comfortable then the Gt, but the sound of triump´s special exhausts give this bike something extra. You get the feeling you are driving a souped-up bike and you feel bad!(just like the old days with my zundapp, when half the speed was between my ears and the exhaust, ha,ha) All in all the Gt is a very nice bike, we just have to try it again and take it out on a longer run to test the long distance comfort. Oh, and I have to get good goggles. Because driving naked with sunglasses (this definetly sounds funny for people who do not know naked bikes...)tends to get your eyes watering when you reach 100km/h! The choice between the Gt, Thruxton or the always safe(if not a bit boring) bet of an VFR has not yet been made. I wonder what the other first drive experiences are out there... untill next time! |
