Fuel economy is not so great

The fuel economy on my 2001 Road King ranges from 33 - 39 mpg. This is not horrible, but not nearly as good as my old 2001 Sportster 1200s which averaged 50 mgp (54 was the highest). I run synthetic oil, have new Dunlops on both ends (and they are properly inflated). Both the intake and exhaust are stock. I only use Chevron Supreme fuel. The cost of gas is not so much of an issue as is the range. Is this kind of mileage normal for this bike? Suggestions for improvement?
