1st gear problem

I have a 1990 Ducati PASO and I am having a problem down shifting to 1st gear after I have ridden for approximately 10 minutes. If I let the bike set for 5~10 minutes it will go into 1st gear. Can anyone give me an idea as to what is causing this and how do I fix the problem.
