BMW R1100S- a different experience. |

Over the past 24 months I have been through various bikes and have been unable to settle on any of them for various reasons, none of them particularly bad. It all started with Ducati, a 996, my dream bike for which I had dreamt of for years (as part of the 916 era) but pretty soon I realised the Ducati´s shortcomings; cramped, temperamental, unreliable etc (although still perhaps the sweetest handling, coner carving machine I´m ever likely to own). This was followed in a rush by an Aprilia Mille R (Great), a Honda SP1 (OK), a Honda SP2 (much better) and then by a 2002 Fireblade, as i thought that I had to get back to my four cylinder roots to enjoy biking. However, the mountainous roads I use here in the Philippines do not do justice to the ´Blade. A while ago I was given the oportunity to trade (yet again!) and I managed to get hold of the R1100S with a few extras/sports package/ van der Linden pipes, a bit of carbon here and there etc. I must say I ventured into the trade with some trepidation, and I had some serious doubts about the BMW. As it turned out, the bike was delivered and it took us ten minutes to get it off the truck during which I immediately felt the weight of the bike-(the ´Blade, by comparison, took a couple of minutes to load). I was, and still am, impressed by the design of the R1100, which I guess can be described as handsome, with some distinct design points, such as the front with its squinty eye headlights and the rear single sided swing arm is gorgeous. I took the shing red machine for a quick half hour spin that same afternoon. For the first ten minutes I thought that it had all been a terrible mistake. I was riding a tractor on two wheels! I then got out of town a bit where there are some tight turns followed by sweeping left and right handers. All I can say is that the R came into its own, settling in well and proving itself stable, well handling, comfortable, and deceptively swift. Fast forward a while later and I can pinpoint with ease what the R1100S has that all the previous bikes over the last 24 months has given me in loads: An enormous amount of GRIN FACTOR! I find myself grinning from ear to ear at all the good points an even the agricultural atttributes of this bike. I find myself riding at ease and enjoying the sheer joy at commuting to work or enjoying a casual ride now and then. I´ll soon be doing a long trip and look forward to the experience! This must be a reflection on me maturing with age (I am now 35, started riding at about 12) but I think its to do with realistic riding in the country I now live- the Philippines. |
