I have both a BMW 1200 GT and a 2002 Ducati ST2 (944 cc). The BMW shows good handling, due to its low centre of gravity and good, smoothly delivered, performance considering the weight it is pulling, albeit from a 1200cc engine.
My major criticisms are: the indicator switches are not ergonomically placed or operated on a SINGLE SWITCH LIKE MOST OTHER BIKES. Jumping onto the BMW from any other bike you have to think about signalling - a thing that should come naturally, and I am suprised that a safety orientated company like BMW has not dealt with this, either on product development, or retroactively. Whenever I press the horn button, the LH indicator goes on when riding with thick gloves on. Another contentious SAFETY ISSUE!
Also, due to the position of the single exhaust muffler, the pannier on that side is reduced in size and cannot take a full face helmet. The other side also is a tight fit for helmets. My Ducati Panniers can take one full face helmet each side much easier. That´s better than carrying them around with you.
Otherwise the bike is a pleasure to ride as a tourer, although thirsty when high speed cruising. With the Ducati, you sit more into the bike with the fairing wrapping close to you. This gives you a sense of being part of the bike when cornering. With the BMW, the fairing is further forward and you sit more upright, therefore get a more "grandstand" view of the road, as though in an armchair and fel more remote from the bike on corners. The two bikes have entirely different characteristics, but I love them both for their differing positive traits. Pity about the BMW Indicators and Panniers.
