Two months ago, I bought a 1998 Thunderbird Sport in red and black with 47,000 miles on the clock. In my opinion this is quite possibly the best looking bike ever made. The two upswept silencers on the right hand side are a touch of styling genius. I have only covered about a thousand miles but feel I am now in a position to make a few comments. The first is the weight of the bike. This thing is heavy. The brakes are just about adequate, which is probably due to the weight. At least the front brakes are adequate. The rear barely works. I am told this is normal. In time I will give it a closer inspection. The only other gripe I have is how awkward these bikes are to work on. On to the positives. The sound is fantastic. Mine has the off road silencers and sounds like a Spitfire. The styling is so good that I need to mention it again. Handling is ok for a heavy bike but I should probably have a go at tweaking the suspension settings. Finally, fuel economy. Fantastic! Without really trying I can achieve 55+ mpg. The previous owner changed sprocket sizes so that the engine is turning slower at cruising speeds. Unless you must rip away from traffic lights this is a good mod. All in all highly recommended, and early models are now very affordable.
