They let me try one! |

Introductions first: I am a 37 year old guy, married (wife likes fast cars and it seems now motorcycles as well)and I have been riding motorcycles for a long time. But I have not had a bike for years and are now contemplating to get one. I like the retro style. I am not into the super fast jap´s. So there are a few options: the new Ducati classics (I tried the GT 1000, read the review!)ofcourse the Triumph Thruxton and oke to be on the safe side I might be thinking about a honde VFR 800. But just because it is a good sporting tourbike for two persons. But first the Thruxton. I finally had the oppertunity to try the Thruxton. A yellow one with the optional exhausts which actually make a sound! I had sat on it several times in the showroom, thinking it felt a little thin and light. It belied it´s actual weight. But when they started the bike, while I was signing my life away, it send a thrill through my spine! Is that my bike that makes that sound? That hard bark with the explosions when it backfires? Wauw! WAUW!! And my wife, who came along to see me drive, thought it was realy cool. And the color suited me as well... Oke, lets take it for a ride..The low handlebars take a little getting used to, the same as the steering reaction. But once on the way...it´s all right! The sound is the real blast of the bike. It backfires when throttling down or when you cranck it at the stoplights, super. Makes you feel bad. Just like the old times when I drove a slightly illegal moped. It handles beautifully around the corners. Very smooth action on the throttle, slick gear-switching, it pack´s enough punch to be absolutly fun and still not be a deathtrap. The looks are super. Cool color, super stylish, naked and rough, but with reliable technology. You don´t need to scream around town at neck breaking speeds with this bike. You don´t have clammy hands while trying to impress and at the same time keep the bike on the road, you just have fun! I am sure this is not the bike to ride with two persons for a longer period of time. You could, if you take enough brakes in between. Gives the public time to admire the bike while you strech you legs, arms and everything else... But this is the bike you just take out for a last quick spin around town. Flash by the local cafe, shoot by some friends, pick a few extra corners and stop again outside the before mentioned cafe. Preferably when it is a warm summer night with people on the terrace. Just look cool for a bit, start it up again, let it backfire...and roar off for home. Just because you want to. But remember, if you buy one, take the exhausts!!! It tripples the fun! |
