This bike is the distilled essence of the word "motorcycle". So many modern motorcycles have such an automotive influence on them that you lose what attracted you to motorcycles in the first place. Not so here! With a few simple after market additions, such as a boyer ignition, Progressive Suspension springs/shocks, modern tires (the standard is Avon Roadrunner, but I use and like ContinentalĀ“s Conti Blitz), and some rearset pegs and proper handlebars, this can be an extremely reliable and unbelievably fun motorcycle to ride. I now own a 1977 Tiger and previously owned a 1978 Bonneville. I can now say that I do prefer the single carb Tiger (one 30mm Amal vs two is the only difference in the two bikes). It is smoother (twin carbs out of sync can cause one cylinder to "bang" harder than the other, increasing vibration), more tractable (higher vacuum through the single carb at low rpm) and since only one cylinder is on intake at a time anyway, it seems to actually perform better from 0-100 mph. Above that a second carb begins to make itĀ“s presense known. Oh yeah, I also replaced the 47 tooth rear sproket fitted to American models with a 43 tooth one. Unless your only concern is quater mile drag times, this will increase your fun factor as well. |
