| In 1972, I was a young 19-year old Marine Corps private, stationed overseas at Marine Barracks, Rota Spain. I had enlisted for 4 years under the combat arms enlistment program and had my $1300 bonus in the bank. Walking down the street one evening, on the way back to the base, I came upon a showroom window of a Seat auotomobile dealership. Sitting in that window was the most gorgeous motorcycle I had ever seen. A 1973 Triumph Bonneville, candy apple red with gold trim. Price? $1500. Prior to entering the Marines, during high school, a friend of mine bought a 1967 Triumph T25. It was bright yellow with a large Triumph decal on the tank. He let me ride it a few times, even though my dad told me I could never have a motor cycle. (As a youngster, on the way to grandma´s house, he would always point out the intersection on the highway where a childhood friend of his had been killed on an Indian). Anyway, I fell in love with that little 250cc Triumph, and went about looking in the paper for one of my own. After a few weeks I found an add for a 1968 BSA 250cc Shooting Star. Torquoise and cream tank, with the bright red BSA badge. Absolutely beautiful. I bought it for $450, and drove it to my buddy´s house, where I kept it. Each day, I would go over to his house in the morning, and we would ride our motorcycles to school. About a week later, I felt confident enough to bring it home. I washed it and was shining it up when my dad came home form work. He looked at that beautiful BSA sitting in the garage and asked me who´s it was. I said it was mine. He then asked me how much I paid for it. I told him $450. He then told me to park it next to the road with a for sale sign on it. I sold it the very next day. I say all of that to attempt to relate how infatuated I became with that bright red Triumph in Spain. Well, after a few more weeks, saving all my money, I finally had enough to go down to that dealership and buy that Bonnie. A buddy ended up buying a Norton 850 Commando, and we made several weekend trips, up the Atlatic and Mediterranean coastline to Torremolinos (I had jsut read james Michner´s "The Drifters" and could swear I saw some of the characters in his book at the many bars and clubs we visited. Another buddy ended up wrecking my Bonnie and offered to buy it from me, and ship it back to the states. Haven´t seen it since. |
