i would really be careful about some of the goofy responses youve been getting. talk to LONG TIME mechanics and machinists who know these bikes....and performance can mean many things, are you looking for low end power or top end speed? slightly restricted exhausts (backpressure) DO give low end power, but a more open pipe lets it scream out. lightened flywheels will rev quicker, but less smooth..remember its a 500, you dont need to make a 650 out of it,they produced plenty of those .polished exhaust ports, a BALANCED crankshaft (if u r doing a rebuild ) K & N filters, elec. ignition, and generally keeping it IN TUNE will give you DEPENDABLE performance. ive had one for 40 yrs, and can be a nimble dependable satisfying machine when you dont screw with its engineering too much. good luck!
