Cyndi, The 1997 Speed triple is a 885 cc bike, while the 2001 is a 995cc bike. I have heard that the 2001 has a better fuel injection system also. However I happen to own a 1998 speed Triple (885cc) and have loved every one of the 20,000 miles that I have put on it. But I would have to say that given the option I would probably buy the 2001.
