Optional Gel Touring Seat Removal

Hello fellow and potential Rocket III riders,

I have on my RIII the optional gel touring integrated rider and pilion seat. Since no instructions were given with it and I recently had to remove the seat I thought I would share with you what I learned so you can avoid the frustration I had. When my dealer tried to explain to me how to remove the seat they also shared that it took 3 of them to do so. After much "research" into the matter I am now able to remove the seat myself but it still can be a "bugger."
There is a keyhole in the lower right side panel into which the key must be inserted and turned to start the process. This will free the latch on the rider´s portion of the seat although much turning of the key and tugging upward on the widest portion of the saddle part of the seat may be necessary to free it. Lets just say, in mine anyway, that the seat is extremely secure.

Once the rider´s portion of the seat is free, there is a ring located on the left hand side under the narrowest portion of the seat between the rider´s and pilion section. Pull on this ring (which may be difficult to get at for those with chubby fingers and lack of dexterity such as yours truly) and this will free the latch on the pilion portion. One good tug on the seat and it should come out.

My dealer had evidently forgotten about this ring and did not tell me about it, thus, my cousin, who works on his own MC, and I spent 2 1/2 hours trying to remove the seat. For about the fifth time I happened to be feeling under the seat and finally found the ring which is fairly well concealed.

If anyone knows of an easier way to remove this seat aside from using a cro-bar, let me know.

I have a little more than 5,000 miles on my RIII and it is still a great machine in my mind.
