1999 Triumph Daytona 1200 advise |

I an seeking purchase advise. I have located a 1999 Daytona 1200 SP on consignment at a dealer with less than 1000 miles on it. I was told it was bought as an investment by a guy who has about 10 bikes and has decided to sell this one. I love the retro look of this special edition black and gold bike and also that it is one of the only sport bikes that I fit comfortably on. I am 6ยด4" (1.93m) and 190 pounds (87kg). I currently have a 2004 Yamaha Road Star that has been completely trouble free. I was on the point of buying this bike today (Dec. 27, 2005), but the sales manager told me that although the bike has very few miles on it, there is a carburation problem. He said that maybe some carburator cleaner in the gas might fix it after running through a tankful, but on the other hand maybe it would require hundreds of dollars of service. He suggested that I only buy it if I liked to "tinker" with a bike on my own or had a friend who was knowledgeable. His service manager agreed. Naturally this made me very cautious about buying this bike. I am not a "gear head" and I am seeking a trouble free and reliable ride. When I read chat room info (like on this site) all I read is positive, but then I think that owners who write in chat rooms tend to love whatever bike they own. I need a realistic evaluation. Is the Daytona 1200 a bike that is reliable and trouble-free, or is it something that needs to be coddled? Perhaps this particular bike just needs the carbs to be set up by a good mechanic because it has hardly been used, but then why should a Triumph dealer warn me off if that were the case? He is not trying to sell me anything else either. |
