Oil burning problem on Thunderace is do to worn out intake valve guide oil seals not cylinders or piston rings. When engine is rev to the higher rpm something past 6000rmp combustion chamber creates high vacume like enviroment to suck the fuel mixture from intake ports and at the same time saks the oil past worn out valve guide oil seal, especialy the 3rd intake valve that sits below camshaft sebmerged in oil. Puff of blue smoke at starts up is the clear sign as oil drips down on top of piston from above. I think premature wear to the seals is due to DUST entering below air filter as it does not sit tightly on the bottom of the air box, fillters or the air boxes can be eather 1mm to short or 1mm to deep, put foam tape at the bottom of the box where filter meets to clouse the gap. The same problem goes for 89-95 FZR1000,90-94 GTS1000 because they use same air box and filter, these models also burn oil and I dont´t think Yamaha would not catch cylinders bores out of round for 10years production of this engine. Replace valve seals at yours next vave adjastment service, or if you have no money use YAMALUBE 20W-40 it helps, don´t spend your money on expensive oils or synthetics will not help. O I almost forget it is very important that you add combustion chamber cleaner to your gas tank to dissolve the carbon deposits, about every 3rd-5th fill up. My 97 YZF1000 has 81000KM and still runs strong. I ride Yamahas for over 20 years and I put about 300.000Km riding them My 92 FZR1000 also was burning oil but less. Keep yours Thunderace it may burn oil but is one of the best motorcycle to do it all I have ever didden and with its 79lb of tourqe it is kiperuper even to the new stuff , torque is main stuff not peak HP. |
