Kind of late answering this message but here goes anyway. Where I live an ace with under 20,000 on the ticker will sell at retail anywhere from 3,800 to 5,200 depending on the overall condition of the bike. U.S. Dollars that is. The rubber strap closest to the tank is what straps the battery down. As for the greyish black smoke, the bike is running rich and is loading up a bit. The smoke you are seeing is unburned fuel. The bike was set rich at the factory, for a reason. It helped the bike run a little cooler during the break in period.

Yamaha had the carb made with a brass or copper cap covering the air/fuel mixture so it could not be adjusted. If the caps were drilled before their designated "Break in" period, it voided the warranty. During the "aft breaking in servicing" of the bike, the dealer was supposed to drill the caps, and lean the bike out a bit. Unfortunately most either didn´t know that, or just plain didn´t take the time to do it. My money says, that over Half of the aces in the world are still running rich as hell because the air/fuel mixture has never been adjusted. ( You are also losing about 10 HP if your bike isn´t leaned out as intended)

It is fairly easy to check...Pull the tank, pull the airbox...If you have caps covering your mixture screws... you are riding a bike that is only running at about 75% of its potential.

Yank that choked down restrictive air box...buy four cone style K&N filters that cup directly to the carb. See if that doesn´t lean it out enough....it may make it too lean though, if it starts running hot, you´ll have to put the bread box back on it. Personally I have the direct mount cone style filters, a stage one jet kit, and the air/fuel was set on a dyno. It gets a little warm at the stop lights, but not too hot that the fan doesn´t start bringing it down when it kicks on. You wouldn´t beleive the difference in the way an ace runs if it is jetted and breathed out right.

Beats me why Yamaha felt the need to choke the bike with that restrictive air box. They built a powerhouse and then toned it down by choking it and jetting rich. They even went as far as to add an indicator switch that retards the ignition in first and second gear, it makes the bike fire late, again not letting it burn clean and adding to the black unburned fuel smoke you are seeing....disconnect that damn thing too while you are at it.
