| I can power my ace up in first, and shift second in the stand....it takes a little practice. If you haven´t ridden wheelies on a heavy bike such as the ace...I don´t suggest trying to shift in the stand... you have to get it way up so you can blip the throttle and balance the pressure off the tranny to get second without clutching. I agree with the other guy that clutching up in second get the best one wheel stands from the ace. First gear itself has so much torque that there is a fine line between a nice stand, and a bike in your lap. run second gear up to about 4 or 5 grand... half clutch to about 7500 and power it up.....it will up smooth and ride out long. Just for the record, where do you have your mono set at?? if it is set too stiff you´ll leave alot of skid marks, if it is set too spongie the bike will just squat and go... set it about mid range to the stiff side for the best wheelies. I have an after market can, K & N filter, modified air box, and stage 1 jet kit, so I can pretty much just power up in second, but before the mods the half clutch in second was the only way to go. One more tip. Im not sure if you know or not, some people say it doesn´t make a difference... but my bike certainly turned skyward easier even though I am not sure I could feel a big boost in power. but anyway, the Thunderace has a first and second gear indicator, it lets the computer know when the bike is in first or second... and the computer retards the ignition... this slightly reduces the power in first and second. Why did Yamaha do this? Beats the heck out of me, perhaps so people didn´t kill themselves? I really don´t know. Behind your shift lever is a cover, remove the cover and you will see the switch. One wire controls your neutral light, the other two are first and second gear indicators... remove those two wires and the computer doesn´t realize the bike is in those two gears and doesn´t retard the ignition. With a bike as powerful as the ace, A slight increase isn´t something you will feel... but the bike dyno´s better... and gets skyward better as well |
