Slack chain

I am new to the world of biking and learnt the hard (and expensive!) way that chain tension and maintenance is very important. However, i am finding that already a couple of weeks after haveing a new sprocket and chain fitted, it is already pretty slack and in danger of costing me more money through wear and tear. Is this a bike problem, and chain problem, or just the way in which i am riding? Any suggestions welcome...
