I just removed and disassembled the fuel valve on the tank of my 96 XV750. It doesn´t look right to me. I´m fairly sure the standpipe to create a reserve supply is gone. Should it not have two filtered inlets from the gasoline, the shorter one being for the reserve supply of gasoline...and a taller one to run with before the reserve...right? I saw a drawing of it on the Net that had two, but mine has no taller one. There is a hole where one could have been. Maybe it is inside the tank.

However...I disassembled it and it appeared to route the gasoline correctly for two of the settings, but when in the reserve position the channel on the inside of the valve handle doesn´t appear to route the gasoline to the engine, just sort of blocks it off. Maybe that´s why my reserve never seemed to work. I rode it for the first 4000 miles with it missing slightly when idling only, then it just started working right one day. Now, another 6000 miles later, it´s started missing on one cylinder when I get going good on the freeway. Then, if I pull over, idle or just kill the engine for a minute or less, it starts running right, till I get out on the freeway again. I am sure it is only one cylinder that misses but I can see little difference in the plugs coloration when I removed and replaced them. It misfires on one cylinder for a half second or so, works fine, misfires, fine...etc. After I have stopped for a minute, it idles just fine, at about 600 rpm. Too low, but I would think since it does, there must be something intermittently clogging the fuel path when at freeway speeds.

Help:

1. Is it fuel trash clogging the carb when up to speed?

2. Is it one side of the coil expanding with the heat of the highway speed and creating an intermittent firing. I intend to check the resistances today to compare with my Clymer handbook specs.

3. Is it the module in the distributor (tho I don´t know why it would choose just one cylinder to misfire...or could it)? I need a Haynes handbook, I understand, to realize the correct resistances there.

Even with all the missing, it gets fifty miles a gallon.
