Like many I wanted a bike for quite a while and did a lot of research on the subject before pulling the trigger on a purchase. I bought my bike (a 1981 Yamaha Virago) on the internet for $600 last June and had her delivered for an extra $100. She came in pieces. The rear swingarn had been removed, the front forks had been pulled from the triple tree, the seat and tank had also been removed from the frame, and the engine had been dropped out but was still intact (factory seals!) The guy I had bought it from started to take her apart in hopes of raking the front, extending the frame and essentially turning her into an ol´ school chopper. But, the design of the ´81 Virago makes this nearly impossible!!!!! There is no under carriage for the engine and the airbox is incorporated into the frame. Raking the bike would require an addon triple tree or splitting the factory weld. The shaft drive (which is seriously maintenance free) makes rear extension also almost impossible for a backyard mechanic such as myself. I am guessing that he only discovered this AFTER dismantling the major components of the ride. I went to work straigt away reassembling the bike as it was intended and found several parts missing. After hunting on eBay for directionals, wiring, insturments, etc. I had a near factory machine. I did take the liberty of repainting her, and adding a ´chopped´ sissy bar (added a little chrome for looks . . . but more so to strap things to on trips). It took several months but after I got her together she had been relatively maintenance free (except having to rebuild the starter) and replacing the starter gear twice (if this happens to you, buy a new one!!) and I burned about 10,000 miles in less than a year. Now, I have another problem. Plugs are getting fouled. I regapped them to run hotter but that doesn´t seem to fix the problem, only delay it. I can´t seem to figure out what to do other than replace them every 500 miles or so. She also starts to backfire after a while . . . I´m mechaincally inclined but am not sure if I want to take on an engine rebuild (at least not until after riding season). I´ve dumped seafoam in the tank, used gumout additive, etc. and that seems to help but again, I am only delaying the problem . . . any suggestions????
