My generater/alternater whines like a jet plane...normal?

I have a 95 750 Virago and my bike runs great but the alternater/generator makes this loud whining sound which gets louder when i let off the throttle and the idle drops. Is this normal for these bikes. I´ve yet to hear another bike sound like that.It´s very annoying and sounds more like a jet plane coming down the road than a motorcycle.
