starting problems 85 virago 750

My son passed away earlier this year and left behind a 1985 Virago 750 that hasn´t run since 2006. For a few reasons I would like to get the bike running again. I need a wiring diagram for the starting circuit to help me troubleshoot.
The bike doesn´t turn over when the start button is pressed. I have limited knowledge of motorcycles but have an electrical background.I have put 12v to the solenoid and it works, the run relay goes on and off with the run switch, I have traced the wire from the start switch and I get 12v when it is pressed all the way to a connector under the seat that is plugged into a fly lead with a plastic terminating block at the end. I have no idea what is inside the block (diode, resistor, fuse????) or where the 12v goes from there, the neutral indicator light is on which I am assuming must be interlocked somewhere along the way ........ and that is where I am stuck, short of undoing the whole harness and hand tracing wires I am not to sure what to do next.
Also what should I do to a bike that hasn´t run in 6 years before allowing it to turn over/start to prevent any damage?? (while testing the solenoid I disconnected the +ve lead from the starter motor so it would not turn over)
I hope my ramblings make sense.
Any advise/help would be appreciated
Thanks
Terry
