If it is backfiring try using a higher octane fuel - high octane fuel generally causes XV1100s to run too rich but if you have after market pipes that are not as restrictive, higher octane fuel will help to reduce (if not eliminate) backfiring - if yours is running lean you can try that - otherwise you may have a leak at one of your header gaskets - you can check those.
