Can´t help on the first part of your question, Backfiring with this bike is always going to happen if you have an aftermarket exhaust system. I have V&H Classic II (full system). Best pipes I´ve ever had bar none, look and sound great! What I´ve learned is that if you engage the clutch on decell, it helps . Also my bike doesn´t backfire that often.
