cant find neutral?

ive just been for a spin on my 52 xt600e ( 10,800 miles on the clock) and i couldnt find neutral? any one else had this problem or know the cure? its between first and second obviously but i had real problems. overall the gearbox feels notchy around 1st 2nd and third. love the bike though especially the low end and dry road handling.
