| The engine and transmission(including the clutch)both use the same oil. One year when I got my bike out of storage, I put valvoline maxlife in it. I Usually use race oil (Golden Spectro or Yamalube) but I wanted to go riding right then. BAD MOVE! Maxlife has friction modifiers, which are good for valves, BAD for clutches. Plus I have 11.5:1 compression ratio, so I burned-up my clutch by the time I got to the end of a cornfield. The Yamalube oil you get at the dealer is about the best deal. Golden Spectro helps it run cooler, but doesn´t last quite as long, and cost close to $5 a quart. I have used Valvoline VR1 before and it did alright. The XT600 uses a dry sump oiling system. Oil in the tank is sent down to the motor and back as needed. When sitting, the oil will usually leak down into the bottom end, and you will have to warm-up the bike before you check it. If you know that there is oil in the system, start the bike and warm it up. If you don´t know, remove the filler plug/dipstick and fill it ´till oil shows on the bottom of the stick, then go warm it up with about 5-10 minutes of normal riding. Then, stand the bike upright, and check the pull the dipstick out, wipe clean, and put it in the hole. Do not tighten, just let the dipstick seat the hole. Fill it up to full on the stick just like you would a car. My 600 takes about 2.5 quarts. |
