i have a 1983 xt 550 also. what it sounds like to me is yr hose from yr dipstick, do the engine. i dont think it would br prone to leak unless the gasket where the hose mounts to the engine is bad. try tightening them. there should be 2 allen head bolts that mount it to the engine.
