Exhaust odor

I have an 82 XT 550 and ride it around town. THe problem I have is when I get off the bike my clothes and anything I carry have a very strong exhaust odor. My wife doesn´t even like me to leave my coats near hers. Has anyone else experienced this and what are some possible solutions?
