If your battery voltage gets low, it will cause non-starting and backfire. Charge the battery or get a new one. Don´t try the kickstarter. I hurt a knee when it backfired and kicked back.
I had similar problems when a wire broke off at the surface of the charging module and the battery wasn´t being charged. Turned on the turn signal and the engine died.
