Replacing a Brake Rod

I have been in the process (with LOTS of help) of restoring an XS850G for about 2 years now. I am by NO means a mechanic, but with the help of my mechanic friend we got the bike back on the road.

I had it parked in front of the gym while I was working out and someone stole the rear brake rod (which Yamaha no longer manufactures). After about 6 months of searching, I got the rod, but my mechanic is out of commission and I need help.

The replacement looks pretty straight-forward, but I don´t want to mess things up and create a bigger problem. My main question, though, is: does the rod need to be lubricated? Any other helpful tips are welcome.

**Just so we´re clear, this is the rod that is pushed up to make the brakes work when the brake pedal is pushed down on. It is connected to the back end of the pedal.

Thanks in advance.
