can´t find the vin number

i recently purchased a 1980 xs850 and can´t find the vin. there´s no plate and doesn´t seem to be any stamped in the steering column. the person i bought it from said he was the original owner. is the vin stamped on another part of the bike? can i obtain the vin by cross referencing the motor number?
