i had the same problem with my 79 yamaha 400, it sat for 1 year then the crank case was full of gas, my problem was the gas shut off valve not working properly along with the float not closing when full, this resulted in gas overflowing in the carb and draining into the crank case. rebuilt the engine and carb and it works like new now.
