Bad charging system?

I went on a trip with my 1976 XS500 while going down the road the bike began to lose power and started to miss constantly. I had no head or tail light at this point. I let the bike sit for a little while (1 hour)then it fired up and went a short distance further about 5 miles. Now does this sound like a bad carging system? I have rewired some of the components on the bars, and behind the headlight. Thes things haven´t given me any problems as of yet. Could that be part of the problem? What components does the charging system consist of?
